What net worth measures

Net worth is the single clearest snapshot of financial position:

Net worth = Total assets − Total liabilities

It is what would remain if you sold everything you own and cleared every debt. Unlike income, it captures accumulated position rather than flow — which is why a high earner can have a low net worth and a modest earner a high one.

What counts as an asset

Include things with genuine resale or redemption value, recorded at what they would realistically fetch today rather than what you paid.

Exclude ordinary household possessions. Furniture, clothing, and electronics have almost no resale value, and including them inflates the figure without informing anything.

Why honest valuation matters

The temptation is to value optimistically, and it defeats the purpose. Your home is worth what a buyer would pay, not what a listing site estimates or what a neighbour got two years ago. Your car is worth trade value, not the sentimental figure.

A useful discipline is to value assets slightly conservatively and liabilities exactly. If the number is uncomfortable, that discomfort is the information — a flattering figure tells you nothing you can act on.

Reading the result

Negative net worth is common in early adulthood, particularly with student debt and a new mortgage, and it is not a crisis on its own. What matters is the direction of travel over time.

Liquid net worth — excluding home equity and vehicles — is often the more practical figure. Home equity is real wealth, but it cannot pay for an emergency without selling or borrowing against the house. Two people with identical net worth can have very different financial resilience depending on how much of it is liquid.

Composition tells you more than the total. Net worth concentrated almost entirely in home equity means significant exposure to one asset and one market. A more balanced position across cash, investments, and property is generally more robust.

Tracking it over time

A single reading is a snapshot; the trend is the useful thing. Calculating net worth quarterly or annually, on a consistent date and with consistent valuation methods, shows whether your position is improving regardless of what markets did in any given month.

Expect it to move unevenly. Investment values fluctuate, property estimates are imprecise, and debt paydown is steady but slow. A quarter where net worth falls because markets dropped is not the same as one where it fell because debt rose — and the composition breakdown is what distinguishes them.

The two levers are the only ones available: increase assets, or reduce liabilities. Most sustained progress comes from doing both slowly and consistently rather than either dramatically.

What it does not tell you

Net worth ignores income stability, insurance coverage, pension entitlements without a stated transfer value, and future earning capacity. Someone with a modest net worth and a secure profession may be in a stronger position than the number suggests.

It also says nothing about whether your finances suit your life. It is a measurement, not a score, and a rising figure achieved through relentless deprivation is not obviously better than a slower one alongside a life you actually enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate net worth?

Add up everything you own at realistic current value, add up every debt you owe, and subtract the second from the first. The result is your net worth.

Should I include my house in net worth?

Yes, at current market value, with the outstanding mortgage recorded as a liability. It is also worth tracking liquid net worth separately, excluding property, since home equity cannot easily be accessed in an emergency.

Is negative net worth bad?

Not necessarily, particularly early in adult life when student loans and a new mortgage are large relative to accumulated assets. The trend over time matters far more than a single reading.

How often should I calculate net worth?

Quarterly or annually is enough. Calculating more often mostly captures market noise. Use a consistent date and consistent valuation methods so the comparison is meaningful.
